I CAN Pierce My Ears. But I CAN'T Pluck My Brows?!!!
23 Aug 2008, 10:17 am
I hadn't heard that before. Still, piercings are not deemed haram, yet they alter the body.
23 Aug 2008, 11:14 am
the haram police will have to pry the tweezers out of my cold, dead hand before i stop tweezing! my reasoning is that i have a medical condition related to inappropriate hair growth, so i am really just normalizing the growth and making it what it should be before my hormones went insane :)

Well... It's actually halal to pluck your eyebrows if they are extremely and abnormally thick/messy but you have to be careful to just normalize them and not go all out and fancy.
23 Aug 2008, 11:18 am
It's not about it sucking LOL. It's about contradictions. It makes no sense... at least not to me.
23 Aug 2008, 11:20 am
Now this makes even less sense to me!
23 Aug 2008, 11:23 am
Oh... And as for the dying the hair black thing...
It's actually halal in some instances. For example: Muslim armies were known for dying the hair of older soldiers black to make them look young. It intimidated the enemy because it appeared from far away that the muslims had an insane amount of young and healthy soldiers.
I think it's only haram because a lot of people do it to try to reverse the hands of time and appear younger than they are. But that makes me wonder: Are anti-aging creams haram?
23 Aug 2008, 11:23 am
I think it makes sense. It's giving exceptions to the poor girls who are cursed with this:
23 Aug 2008, 11:25 am
But, ummm... the soldiers did it to appear younger. So wasn't that haram of them?
23 Aug 2008, 11:27 am
Dying a soldier's hair black to avoid unneccessary battles is a lot different than dying a 35 year old woman's hair black so she looks younger so she can attempt to tell the man proposing to her that she's actually 24.
23 Aug 2008, 11:30 am
Point is it was done by them to look younger. And if that deems it haram then either way it should be haram. Can't have it both ways... makes no sense. And if altering the body is haram then piercing ears (for example) should be haram. There are contradictions.

Except that is where you're wrong. It is specifically stated that for the purposes the soldiers used the black hair dye, (( to avoid the unneccessary battle, deaths and waste of precious resources)) it's halal. They didn't do it because it looks oh so fabulous. Even though I prefer men with black hair. :P
It's haram to dye your hair black for beautification purposes. When it came to those battles you didn't have a bunch of old guys saying, " Man... My old brown hair color is so lame. Let's spice things up with some black dye!"
Things vary from situation to situation and islam acknowledges that. So I guess that it's not really haram but makruh and probably haram in most cases.
And I really don't see how it's a big deal. You can dye your hair super dark brown or blue-black.
Anyways read this. It explains it better than me. I'll look for something about piercings.
23 Aug 2008, 11:44 am
Yeah, no doubt... you can dye it REALLY close to black! And gracias for looking for info on piercings. BTW I'm not saying I think piercings ought to be deemed haram. Just saying it doesn't make sense that they are not, being they alter the body.

You see, if your wardrobe complies with shari'ah law and you're wearing a khimar then your ears should be covered. So you can wear ear rings even though they alter the body and are used as an adornment because they are usually covered. Plus, wearing huge hoops when you can't see your ears is kinda retarded and which is why most hijabis don't do it.
However, your eyebrows are placed smack dab on your face. Even with a niqab (( which is purely optional)) it can be kinda hard to fully conceal your eyebrows. So I guess it's why you can get a full body wax but not your eyebrows done. Because nobody should be seeing your body hair. However everyone is allowed to see your face.

OK. I totally do get your logic. But here's a thought... no one can see my tatts
.
23 Aug 2008, 12:06 pm
Well tattoos are permissable as long as you got them before you reverted. I believe I've read somewhere that it's actually discouraged and unneccessary to remove them after you got them. But I think tattoos are a totally different matter than piercings, plucking and hair dye.
23 Aug 2008, 12:09 pm
All alter the body. So I see them as same. Yep I too heard & read removal of tatts is not necessary, as it further alters the body. And the act of getting them is forgiven upon taking Shahada.
23 Aug 2008, 12:13 pm
Well Islam sees them differently, obviously and I think that matters more. :P
But I'll try to find info on why it's halal to get your ears pierced and not a tattoo...
Perhaps it's because a tiny hole in your ear that's a fraction of a cm is pretty different than a tattoo. Or maybe it's because tattoo's have pretty much always been associated with paganism and other not so halal things. And we're not supposed to imitate the non muslims...
But I'm no scholar and my brain is fried due to trying to do several assignments last minute and then trying to see why certain things are halal or haram. So I'm off to sleep.
23 Aug 2008, 12:21 pm
well what i was told was that they're only haraam because in the time of the prophet it was well known for prostitutes to do their eyebrows, and so a prostitute could be spotted by the fact that she had her eyebrows done, and it was reported that the prophet (Saw) said; The curse of Allah Ta’ala is upon the woman who plucks.
(Bukhari)
so from that it was deemed haraam, and yeah i heard it was makrooh to pierce ones ears.
23 Aug 2008, 12:24 pm
Hmmmm... still doesn't make sense to me. Altering is altering. Sweet dreams
